Three persons were arrested for allegedly stealing motorcycles and autorickshaws in Bhiwandi in Thane district, a police official said on Monday. A total of 14 motorcycles and four autorickshaws with a cumulative value of Rs 7.90 lakh have been recovered from the three persons, one of whom is a resident of Malegaon in Nashik district, Zone II Deputy Commissioner of Police Navnath Dhavle said. "Their arrest has solved 17 crime cases registered in Nizampura, Narpoli, Bhiwandi town, Bhiwandi taluka police station," he added. (PTI)

The questioning of NCP leader Jayant Patil by the ED on Monday evoked strong reactions with party MP Supriya Sule claiming that Opposition leaders are being targeted while Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Aaditya Thackeray alleged that people siding with truth are being pressured through Central probe agencies. Aaditya alleged the country is witnessing an authoritarian regime as Patil, who heads the Maharashtra NCP unit, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate here in a money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in the now-bankrupt financial services firm IL&FS. "Those who side with the truth, which is sometimes against the government, are being pressurised with the help of central probe agencies, and this pattern can be seen across the country," the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader told reporters. Speaking about Patil's questioning, NCP leader and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule said, "Of all the ED or CBI cases in the last few years, 90 to 95 per cent are against the Opposition leaders in the country. This has been widely reported by the media as well. The one who is in opposition easily gets notices from the probe agencies." (PTI)

Former NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede is trying to show the alleged messages exchanged with film superstar Shah Rukh Khan as "certificate of integrity", the CBI told the Bombay High Court on Monday during a hearing of a petition of the official who is accused of seeking Rs 25 crore as bribe from the actor for not implicating his son Aryan in the Cordelia cruise 'drug bust' case. A vacation bench of Justices Abhay Ahuja and MM Sathaye on Monday extended till June 8 the interim protection granted to Wankhede in the case. Last Friday, the court had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation not to take any coercive against him till May 22. (PTI)

Patil, who heads the Maharashtra unit of the Nationalist Congress Party, is being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate at its office here in a money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in the now-bankrupt financial services firm IL&FS, an official said."Jayant Patil need not be afraid if he has not done anything (wrong). Central agencies or state agencies are doing their work. He must have been summoned because probe agencies might be having some information or case against him," said Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio. (PTI)

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday made a surprise announcement of withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes, but gave the public time till September 30 to either deposit the Rs 2,000 notes in accounts or exchange them at banks. Hundreds of NCP workers on Monday staged a protest outside the Enforcement Directorate's office in south Mumbai against summons issued by it to state party president Jayant Patil in a money laundering case. The protesters claimed the Centre and the ED were indulging in "political vendetta". Patil appeared before the ED here on Monday in a money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in the now bankrupt financial services firm IL&FS, an official said. The agency's office is located close to the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) office at Ballard Estate in south Mumbai. The protesters, wearing Gandhi caps and holding placards and banners, also carried a large size cut-out of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. They shouted slogans against the Union government and the ED, accusing them of indulging in "political vendetta". (PTI)

The Bombay high court on Monday extended till June 8 the interim protection granted to former NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede in a case in which he is accused of demanding Rs 25 crore bribe from superstar Shah Rukh Khan for not implicating his son Aryan in the Cordelia cruise 'drug bust' case. Last Friday, the HC had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not to take any coercive against the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer till May 22.

‘Part-time job’ con on rise in Mumbai, 170 cases in 4 months

A total of 170 cases of ‘part-time job’ fraud — also called ‘task’ fraud — have taken place in Mumbai which is 10. 5% of 1,619 cyber offences that have occurred in the city in the first four months (till April 30) of 2023, said the Mumbai police crime report. Of the 170 task fraud cases, people lost collectively over Rs 5. 5 crore in 51 cases.Of task fraud cases, 51 complaints were registered with the Cyber police. Recently, the cyber police in Mumbai solved three cases out of the 51 ‘like and earn’ task frauds where three citizens were duped of Rs 62 lakh and 12 people have been arrested. The Mumbai police crime report showed 119 cases and 20 arrests across 93 police stations while there were 51 cases and 12 arrests shown with Cyber police stations.

CBI quizzes Sameer Wankhede again for 5 hours in cruise drug case

The CBI questioned former NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede for five hours on Sunday, in the corruptionextortion case connected to 2021 Cordelia cruise drug bust case involving actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan. The Bombay HC has scheduled to hear Wankhede’s plea challenging the CBI FIR on Monday, and has restrained the CBI from taking any “coercive action” against him till then.In his plea before a vacation bench of the high court, Wankhede urged the court to quash the CBI FIR citing several documents to claim that no bribe demand was made, including an additive filed by Aryan Khan before the high court while he was in jail custody in October 2021.

New vice-chancellor will join Mumbai University at a crucial time

Five candidates are left in the race to become Mumbai University’s next vice-chancellor. They were selected from among 20 shortlisted ones after an interview at NITIE, Powai, on Friday by the MU’s V-C search-cum-selection committee, headed by former University Grants Commission chairman D P Singh. An IIT professor, the state’s additional chief secretary (home) and a UGC nominee were also o n the committee. The names were handed over to the governor the same evening by the committee members. From across the country, 80 aspirants had applied for the post.
