MADURAI: The Wildlife Institute of India along with Ramanathapuram Wildlife Division, the Indian Coast Guard and the Marine Elite Force took out a motorcycle rally in Rameswaram on Monday to create awareness on dugong conservation.
The rally was held ahead of the World Dugong Day which is celebrated on May 28.
Dugong, a marine mammal, that feeds on the seagrass on the seabed, is a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act. The Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Bay have the largest population of dugongs in India.
Bakan Jagdish Sudhakar, wildlife warden and director of Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, flagged off the rally from A P J Abdul Kalam memorial in Rameswaram. The rally ended at the Wildlife Warden office in Ramanathapuram town. Around 35 officials took part in the motorcycle rally.
