India to become biggest semiconductor manufacturer in next 5 years: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi, May 22 (KNN) With the right ecosystem in place, India will become the biggest semiconductor manufacturing destination in the world in the next five years, Minister of Electronics Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
Speaking on the Express Adda on Saturday, the IT minister said that with production in India being the cheapest globally, the country has the potential to become the biggest chip producer in the world.
“ In December 2021, the Centre had announced a USD 10 billion semiconductor manufacturing plan with a fabrication plant expected to get approval soon,” he said.
Elaborating on the complex process of semiconductor manufacturing, he said, “There is a need for 250-odd very special chemicals and gases, and a reliable power supply, if there is a voltage fluctuation for even three seconds, then the whole day’s production will be impacted.”
“There are some challenges that will need to be addressed to kick-start and sustain semiconductor manufacturing in India,” he said.
The minister was in conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director, Indian Express Group, and Anil Sasi, National Business Editor, The Indian Express. (KNN Bureau)
