Galaxy A14 goes official in India, but is it even worth it?

Last week’s leak concerning Galaxy A14 4G prices for India was correct. Samsung kicked off this week with the Galaxy A14 4G hitting the stores, and the phone does indeed start at INR 13,999 ($168), which makes it one of the company’s most affordable phones in India and elsewhere. And yet, whether or not it’s worth it is debatable because the Galaxy M series exists.

First things first, let’s have a look at the official specifications. The Galaxy A14 4G in India comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. The phone is equipped with a 6.6-inch IPS LCD that has a 1080 x 2408 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate.

The camera system consists of a 50MP primary shooter, a 5MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro camera. There’s also a 13MP selfie sensor.

In India, the Galaxy A14 4G sports the 8nm Exynos 850 SoC rather than the 12nm MediaTek Helio G80. And finally, the phone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery that caps out at 15W charging.

All in all, the Galaxy A14 is a decent-sounding budget phone. The 64GB model costs INR 13,999, while the 128GB variant will set you back INR 14,999. But here’s the kicker. The Galaxy M14 5G costs the same, and you get more value out of it.

The Galaxy M14 5G is a better phone for the same price

Samsung is selling the Galaxy M14 5G for the same introductory price of INR 13,999 as the A14 4G. However, for that price, the M14 offers 5G connectivity and double the storage (128GB). Throw in a little extra and pay INR 14,999 and you also get 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB.

Beyond memory specifications, the Galaxy M14 5G is objectively better-specced, as you can learn from our in-depth review. It has a superior 5nm Exynos 1330 chipset instead of an Exynos 850 and it’s powered by a 6,000mAh battery with 25W charging capabilities.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Galaxy M14 5G has a 6.6-inch PLS LCD with the same resolution as the A14 4G, but its panel is capable of a 90Hz refresh rate, whereas the A14 tops out at 60Hz. And although the A-series usually has the upper hand over the M lineup in terms of build quality, that rule of thumb doesn’t seem to apply to these two phones. And at the very least, they’re on equal footing regarding build quality.

We’re not sure why Samsung thought it was a good idea to sell the Galaxy A14 4G and the Galaxy M14 5G in India at the same price. But feel free to click those links if you want to buy one or the other, and hopefully, you’ll make the right choice.
