Basic maths path to Class XI science opened with T&C
Panaji: From 2020-21, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education began offering mathematics as two split subjects for the students of Class X.
Students who wished to pursue the science stream and higher education with mathematics as a subject could opt for Mathematics Level I or regular mathematics. Students who did not wish to pursue mathematics in higher education could opt for Mathematics Level II or basic mathematics.
However, last year, many parents whose children opted for basic maths in Class X said that their kids had performed well in the subject and should be allowed to join the science stream in Class XI.
The Goa board has now arrived at options for these students. “Students who have passed Class X with Mathematics II will also be able to apply for a science seat in Class XI. But students who have cleared Class X with Mathematics I will get preference for the Class XI science stream seats,” said Goa board chairperson Bhagirath Shetye. “In the remaining seats, students with Mathematics II will be accommodated.”
However, as this is an admissions-related issue, it will be dealt with at the school level and not at the board level.
Students who had opted for basic mathematics will also have another option.
“If they so wish, these students will be able to appear for the Mathematics I or regular mathematics paper in the Goa board’s supplementary exam to be held in June,” said Shetye. “However, the students will have to appear for the entire year’s portion and clear the test.”
In 2022-23, students appeared for two terminal exams held by the board and the portion was divided into two equal parts for both exams. However, for the June supplementary exam, the student has to clear the paper based on the entire year’s portion.
Of the 11,186 students from 379 schools which offered Maths II as an option, 10,507 or 94% cleared the subject. Maths I was offered by 356 schools, in which 8,610 students appeared for the subject and 8,490 cleared it with a 98.6% pass rate.
