GURGAON: Acting chairperson of
Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) Deep Bhatia on Friday directed
MCG to expedite the work drains at Bandhwari landfill site to prevent leachate from spilling into the Aravalis before monsoon.
The chairperson also met the villagers and environmental activists, who showed him a water hole —spread over 2.5 acres — behind the landfill. The MCG officials said that they had emptied the water hole. Bhatia directed the officials to take samples of the liquid left in the water hole and get it tested. The officials were also asked to ensure that the work of clearing the village road, where waste is dumped and access has been blocked, should be completed soon.
“We showed the chairperson the water hole, which is meant for the wildlife in the area to drink water. The villagers said that the water of the pond was contaminated and that the animals were drinking polluted water. MCG officials suggested that they would fence the water hole, but that would also restrict the animals from approaching it. The villagers also said that they are suffering from skin diseases and cancer,” said Vaishali Rana Chandra, an environmental activist, who also met the chairperson.
The MCG officials told the chairperson that around 3.64 lakh metric tonnes of waste has been processed in Bandhwari from January to March. and the remaining 26 lakh tonnes will be processed by November, as against the set target of September this year.
