The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to appoint 25 transgender people on a contract basis to provide security to various civic establishments including its headquarters.
The decision to employ the transgender people was taken by municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar following a recommendation from the civic security department. Based on their performance, the civic administration will decide on increasing the strength of the transgender staff on civic duty. They will work as employees of private agencies engaged by the PMC on a contract basis.
“The transgender people would be initially posted on security duty at the Kamla Nehru Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, PMC main building and as support staff for anti-encroachment department teams during eviction drives,” said additional municipal commissioner Kunal Khemnar.
The PMC has constituted a committee of social organisations working with the transgender community in Pune to ensure cordial relations between the civic staff and the transgender employees. The committee will also raise awareness among civic body staff and residents about the transgender community.
