Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is all set to launch a Recycle, refurbish, and reuse (RRR) campaign to make public places in the city free from the garbage menace.
In accordance with the ‘Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar’ campaign of the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), the city corporation will be setting up RRR centres across the city from Saturday to June 1, for the convenience of citizens, institutions, commercial enterprises, and others to deposit unused or used plastic items, clothes, footwear, books, newspapers and toys.
Those collected items will be recycled, refurbished, and reused. The citizens will receive eco-friendly products in exchange for their goods. The initiative is expected to help residents and commercial establishments in the city to get rid of old items, which they are unable to dispose of. Meanwhile, the city corporation will set up collection centres for citizens to give used plastic items, old books, used clothes and footwear and any other item that the city chooses, which will be further refurbished, reused, or processed.
MCC commissioner K Channabasappa said that once collected, those items will be handed over to different stakeholders to be refurbished for reuse, or will be made into new products.
“The campaign will be launched in the run up to World Environment Day under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0. We have plans to set up at least 10 RRR centres at various prominent locations in the city. Our volunteers will collect items at the centres between 7am and 1pm. While toys will be handed over to orphanages, schools and anganwadis, books will be sent to libraries. Meanwhile, newspapers, carry bags and other plastic items will be sent for recycling. To encourage people to participate in the campaign, we will also hand over eco-friendly gifts to those who hand over unused or used items to the RRR centres. We have plans to hand over compost bags of 5kg each, so that they can use it for their gardens,” the commissioner said, adding that the locations of RRR centres and their functioning will be finalised soon.
