Ludhiana: The district administration, along with the municipal corporation (MC) and Ludhiana Smart City Limited, jointly launched ‘youth in urban governance’ (YUG) programme on Thursday. The programme is aimed at imparting practical exposure and knowledge about civic, health, and Smart city issues to young minds through field visits so that they can come up with out of the box ideas to improve living conditions in the city.
The dignitaries flagged off buses from the district administrative complex. On the first day, the buses ferried students of Government Senior Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar (boys), to Jamalpur sewage treatment plant on Tajpur Road; students of Government Senior Secondary School, Gobind Nagar, to the museum in Punjab Agricultural University; students of Kundan Vidya Mandir School to MC’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at the MC Zone D office and those of Mount International School to the Nehru Planetarium.
The officials claimed that the initiative would encourage the participation of youth in urban development and they will act as ambassadors who will further convey information about the working of the civic body to their parents and friends. They added that students of government and private educational institutes, including schools and colleges, will be ferried to various places and given first-hand information about the functioning of solid-waste and sewage treatment plants, biogas plants, ICCCs and fire-brigade stations. Besides, they will also be taken to museums, historical, industrial and cultural sites in and around the city. The officials added that experts will provide first-aid training, information related to nutrition and healthy diet, career, law, to the students. DC Surabhi Malik and MC chief Shena Aggarwal said that the programme will leave a great impact on young minds .
