Reliance Retail is reportedly set to bring back Chinese fashion giant Shein to India. According to a report in Economic Times (ET), Reliance Retail will bring Shein, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, to India through a strategic partnership. With this, Shein will make its comeback in India more than two years after its app was banned by the Indian government.
The report said that the country's leading retailer will sell Shein’s products through offline stores owned and operated by Reliance as well as through its app, they said. Shein, which competes with fast fashion labels such as H&M and Zara, closed the last financial year with revenue of $23 billion.
Ban on Shein app in India The Indian government had banned Shein from selling its products in India through its own app in the year 2020. The ban on Shein was part of a larger crackdown on Chinese apps. Another popular Chinese etailer app AliExpress too was banned. The Shein app was blocked on grounds that it “was detrimental to national security”. While the Shein India website appears in Google search results, the website does not open in the country (similar to all banned Chinese websites).
Made re-entry in India via Amazon in 2021 Shein brand made a quiet entry in India via Amazon India marketplace in 2021. Shein featured as a seller on Amazon India's website for the first time during the company’s Prime Day sale. Shein is still there as one of the sellers on Amazon India.
Following its entry in July 2021, the Ministry of Electronics and information Technology (MeitY) told Delhi High Court (HC) in October 2021 that the sale of Shein products on other platforms or websites is not covered under Section 69A and that a blanket order for blocking their sale cannot be passed by the committee constituted under the legal provision. The ministry said public access and functionality of the Shein app was blocked within India in 2020, but the company’s products being sold on a third party platform in the country is a different aspect.
