Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation launched a monthlong programme to make people aware about ways to minimise and recyle household waste. The programme called "Meri Life Mera Swachh Shahar" was rolled out on May 15.
Besides, non-essential items such as old clothes, shoes, books, toys, plastic and electronic items are collected from the public so that they can be recycled to minimise the city’s trash. The programme will continue till June 5, which is marked as the World Environment Day.
“As President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to arrive on May 24, the RMC is focusing on sanitation," an RMC official said.
Assistant public health officer, Kiran Kumari, said, “The mission’s objective is to decrease consumption of harmful products and maintain cleanliness. At various locations across the city, stalls to educate people about the ‘triple R’ (reduce, reuse and recycle) will be opened. These centres can be established in retail centres, open-air markets and undeveloped land. Women from NGOs and self-help organisations will collaborate with the mission so that a large number of local people can be involved. Regarding the programme, a city-wide awareness campaign is currently being conducted."
In addition, a review meeting was conducted on Thursday to ensure the cleanliness of all major routes and orders were issued to paint the walls at all intersections. During the occasion, the deputy municipal commissioner, Rajnish Kumar, said, "Garbage removal, application of bleaching powder and anti-larva drugs and trimming of bushes, among other things, must be ensured to maintain roadside cleanliness."
The enforcement branch has been instructed to relocate the stores from the no-sale zone to the roadside. The employees of the horticulture division were instructed to prune the plants and trees installed on the main roads.
