NEW DELHI: Delhi Fire Service (DFS) rescued four people stuck in a lift at a club in Connaught Place after an hour-long operation on Thursday.
The fire department got a call about the incident at My Bar Headquarters around 11.20 pm. "A team of six firefighters from Connaught Place Fire Station reached the spot. Four men were inside the lift; they were screaming for help. They were also thirsty and repeatedly asking for water," station officer Nitin, who led the team, said.
Nitin said they opened the ground floor gate and saw the lift. The fire officials thought the lift was on the first floor, so they went to the floor and opened the gate with the key, but the lift was not there. "Usually, there is a gate on every floor that is cut open or broken to rescue people from the lift, but in this case, the lift was stuck in a place that was not accessible to us. The buttons or other systems were not working and we didn't know the reason behind the failure," the officer said.
The officer said that they sent two of their firefighters to bring a technician who could help them in the rescue operation. They also called rescue tenders on the spot to help them cut the lift in case nothing else worked. However, the technician reached the spot, and with his help, the four people were rescued.
"He reset the system of the lift and manually operated it, taking the lift to the second floor, from where they were rescued. All the four people were in a state of panic," the officer explained.
Nitin further said, "They had vomited and urinated inside the lift. They were very angry after coming out. Later, they told us that they are friends and work for different companies. They had come for partying and were going on the ground floor when the incident happened." All the four men were aged between 25 and 30 years.
Atul Garg, director, Delhi Fire Service, said it was one of the toughest rescue operations, which was handled perfectly by the team.
Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal said they had not received any complaint in this regard.
Gurvinder, owner of My Bar Headquarters, said it was a minor incident, which took place due to technical issues.
"The fire department did not do much, it was the lift technicians who opened the lift. No one was hurt or injured. The issue was resolved quickly," he claimed.
In 2017, a group of eight people got stuck in the lift at another famous restaurant for over three hours in Connaught Place. One of them had even fallen unconscious. The fire department had to then use gas cutters to cut the lift and rescue the boys.
