PUNE: The maximum temperatures across the state are likely to increase by 2-3°C over the next five days and the mercury may surpass the 40°C-mark in Shivajinagar by Saturday.
A forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday indicated that the day temperature in Lohegaon would hover around 40°C on Friday. The maximum temperature could rise to 41-42°C in areas such as Lavale and Magarpatta in the coming days.
High night temperatures are also likely to add to residents' discomfort as IMD has forecast they would be in the range of 23°C to 24°C in Shivajinagar and Pashan. These are likely to hover around 24°C for several days in Lohegaon. Chinchwad, Lavale and Magarpatta are likely to see higher minimums, in the range of 24-25°C for several days this week.
The maximum temperature in Shivajinagar on Wednesday was 38.5°C, nearly two degrees higher than normal. Lohegaon was slightly warmer at 39.3°C, over two degrees above normal.
The maximum temperature in Koregaon Park touched 40°C on Wednesday. The maximum temperature was 40°C or above on the day at six locations in Pune district, including Dhamdhere, Purandar, Shirur, Lavale and Dudulgaon. IMD's bulletin on Wednesday said no significant change was expected in many parts of northwest and central India during the next 48 hours, but there could be a rise by 2-3°C thereafter. No significant change was likely in the rest of India except coastal Andhra Pradesh, where it was likely to fall by 2-3°C after 24 hours.
Heatwave conditions in isolated pockets were experienced over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal on Wednesday. Heatwaves have been forecast in isolated pockets in Rajasthan and south Uttar Pradesh on May 20 & 21. Due to humid air, hot and discomforting weather is likely over Konkan and Goa in the next five days.
