The Maharashtra Home department issued a circular on Thursday asking authorities at the Yerawada Central Prison in Pune to replace the coinbox payphones with smartcard-based phones on an experimental basis.
Prisons in Maharashtra have payphones installed on the premises for the convenience of inmates, who can use them provided they fulfil prescribed criteria. Officials from the State Department of Prisons and Correctional services in Pune said many of these coinbox phones are due for repair and new units are not easily available in the market. The superintendents of several prisons have suggested simple cell phones be allotted to prisons for use by the inmates.
Meanwhile, the state prison department received a proposal from Allen Group in Tamil Nadu to provide smart card-based phones to jails in Maharashtra. After a preliminary scrutiny, the state home department has given a nod to install smartcard-based phones for inmates at Yerawada Central Prison.
