COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation has increased vigilance at the septic matter discharge point in Ukkadam as a truck driver was caught while discharging industrial waste on Wednesday.
Corporation health workers noticed that the liquid discharged from a truck at the discharge point was different in colour. It also resulted in frothing. A strong smell emanated from it. The workers intervened and inquired the driver about it. He initially claimed that it was septic matter waste. However, later he admitted that it was industrial waste effluent.
He was slapped with a fine of Rs 50,000. A police complaint was also lodged by corporation officials to take criminal action against the truck driver.
Health workers have increased vigilance to prevent such incidents in future. Strict action would be taken in such cases, a corporation official said.
