State to face brunt of heat till May 29
Nehru Zoological Park in the city installed coolers and sprinklers on Wednesday to shield animals and birds from the heat
HYDERABAD: Julurpad in Kothagudem on Wednesday sizzled at 46.4 degree Celsius, recording the highest temperature across Telangana so far this season. Mahbubabad, Khammam, Nalgonda and Suryapet too recorded temperatures above 45 degree Celsius. The temperatures in Hyderabad were not far behind with Khairatabad recording 41.6 degree Celsius, making it the hottest place in the city for the sixth day, followed by Gachibowli, 41.3 degree Celsius.
If that wasn't all, India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s latest models predict at least 10 more days of high heat and sunny conditions are in store for Telangana as pre-monsoon showers might give the state a miss in May. "Weather models suggest the time until May 29 will continue to be hot," IMD Hyderabad chief K Nagaratna said.
"The sunny conditions and discomfort will continue up to May 29 with some variations like an odd day of rain and thunderstorms. Pre-monsoon showers may happen only after that as wind patterns across the equator are still not strengthened enough to determine the status of rains," Nagaratna, who is chief scientist at IMD Hyderabad, said.
Owing to continuous heat, there were high chances of heat wave. "Since temperatures will be high for days, there is a possibility of a heat wave in north and northeast districts for one-two days. The state did not experience any heat wave this year," she said. Hyderabad is likely to witness maximum temperatures hovering around 41-42 degree Celsius.
Meanwile, IMD said the arreival of the southwest monsoon in Telangana is uncertain. The IMD had on Tuesday announced that monsoon might hit Kerala on June 4 with an error margin of plus or minus four days. In normal conditions, monsoon hits state 10 days after Kerala.
"Typically, monsoon arrives in Telangana by June 10. Considering delayed onset in Kerala, monsoon arrival date in Telangana will push further," Nagaratna said.
