NOIDA: A third year sociology student at Shiv Nadar University in Dadri allegedly killed his female friend by firing at her and later ended his life at the hostel room on Thursday afternoon.
Investigation revealed that the two were in a relationship that recently turned sour.
According to the police, they received information about a girl having been shot dead inside the campus outside the dining hall at around 1:30 pm on Thursday.
"Following the information, a team from Dadri police station along with the senior officials rushed to the spot. A girl was lying in a pool of blood. She was immediately taken to the Yatharth Hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival," Saad Miya Khan, deputy commissioner of police Greater Noida said.
The girl was identified as Sneha Chaurasia, third year BA Sociology student, and she was shot dead by her classmate Anuj Singh, a resident of Amroha.
"After the search, Singh was found dead in his hostel room. Both the deceased were aged 21. During investigation, it was found that the two met outside the dining hall and spoke to each other for a bit. The two hugged each other as well. The two can be seen with each other for a while. Suddenly Anuj took out a gun and shot at Sneha," Khan said.
Later, the student went to the boys hostel and shot himself in the head.
A pistol was recovered from the spot.
The student had died on the spot.
"During preliminary inquiry, it has been found that the students were in a relationship for the past 1.5 years but since December their relations have turned sour. They had frequent quarrels. They met on Thursday afternoon outside the dining hall. We informed the families of both the students and have taken the bodies into custody and sent them for postmortem," ACP Sarthak Sengar said, adding that teams are currently investigating where the student got the gun from and how he got it inside the campus.
Police said that the university had gone on summer break from May 17 but both the students had stayed back in their hostels.
"The students' sessions had come to an end and they were going to pass out from the university. The girls and boys hostel are located on either side of the hall. The incident was captured on the CCTV cameras of the dining hall. The dining hall was locked but had glass doors. Both the students met right outside it," the ACP said.
The CCTV is from inside the dining hall with lots of tables and folded chairs, and focuses on a man and woman that appear to be standing a distance away, possibly outside of glass doors.
It starts by the man taking off his backpack and holding it towards the woman, possibly showing her something.
The two talk for sometime, and suddenly get aggressive.
The man shoots the girl who also attempts to hit him in return.
Suddenly, the woman is down on the floor.
The man stands over her and tries to grab at something, which is not visible to the camera.
He then puts on his backpack and walks away, while she’s still lying on the ground.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Shiv Nadar University said, "We are deeply saddened and pained at the unfortunate loss of lives of two students at the university today. The matter is currently under investigation by the authorities, and we are closely monitoring the situation. All other residents of the campus are safe. Our utmost priority is the safety and well-being of our students, employees, and the entire community. We are fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation. Our deep and heartfelt condolences go out to the affected families and we are supporting them in every way possible at this difficult time."
