Supreme Court asked the Manipur government to file a fresh status report on relief, security, and rehabilitation measures to help violence-hit persons

The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that it will ensure that the political executive doesn't turn a blind eye to the situation in Manipur and law and order is a state subject. The apex court also asked the government to file a fresh status report on relief, security, and rehabilitation measures to help violence-hit persons.

"Law and order is a state subject. As the Supreme Court of India we will ensure that the political executive does not turn a blind eye to the situation," said a bench of three judges led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

The bench observed that it will not deal with the legal issues arising out of the order of the Manipur high court granting reservation to the Meiteis community and said that the pleas challenging the order are already pending before a larger bench.

Earlier, the CJI stated that the order of the Manipur high court was factually incorrect and emphasisied on taking a firm stance against the flawed decision.

While taking into account the security apprehensions raised by the Kuki and other tribal communities in the state, the Supreme Court ordered the Chief Secretary and his security advisor to assess and take steps to ensure “peace and tranquility" in the villages referred to by tribals.

In its status report filed on Wednesday, the state government said that it took adequate measures to provide relief to the affected individuals and rescued over 46,000 people. The Manipur government also added that more than 3,000 stranded people were taken to airports to enable them to leave the state.

The clashes broke out in Manipur on 3 May, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. More than 50 people were killed in the subsequent violence and property worth crores of rupees was destroyed.
