A teenager drowned in a swimming pool in the Chikhli area of Pimpri Chinchwad Tuesday. The police have booked the lifeguards and management officials at the pool on charges of negligence.
The police have identified the deceased as Rahul Mahantappa Waghmode, 17, a resident of More Vasti in Pimpri Chinchwad. The incident took place at Sai Aqua Marine Swimming Pool in Chikhli around 4 pm Tuesday.
Officials from Chikhli police station said Rahul had gone to the pool with his three friends Tuesday afternoon. There were at least 50 other people at the time in the water at the swimming pool, a police officer said.
Inspector Dnyaneshwar Katkar, in charge of Chikhli police station, said, “At some point during the swim, Rahul came out of the pool and dived into the water. He, however, could not surface. A while later, he was taken out and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Based on the complaint filed by the family members of the deceased, we have booked the lifeguards and swimming pool management officials.”
The police have invoked Indian Penal Code Section 304(A) pertaining to causing death by negligence, not amounting to culpable homicide.
On May 12, a 16-year-old boy drowned at a swimming pool on the premises of a private school in Hadapsar.
