Alert citizens of Margao, calling out lackadaisical approach of Margao Municipal Council (MMC), have alleged that the civic body was dilly-dallying on recovery of huge amounts of money from the defaulting sopo contractor.

“We have learnt that the MMC had sent notices to the sopo contractor and, thereafter, did nothing about it. The administration failed to recover the dues to the tune of `24 lakh from the sopo contractor even though the director of municipal administration (DMA) had clearly directed the MMC to recover it. The MMC needs to tell the citizens as to why the MMC is going slow on recovery of the money,” said Margao citizens, including S. Shaikh and Suresh Naik.

It may be recalled here that the former council had passed a resolution to waive off `24 lakh of the sopo contractor considering his loss of business due to COVID pandemic. The DMA office however had objected to it and directed the MMC to collect the money. The issue has dragged on for the last one year.

“The MMC cannot let go of the taxpayers’ money. We will approach the office of the DMA again on the issue,” the citizens
stated.
