Man shot inside Quick Stop convenience store on West 18th Street in Erie

A man was shot as he was inside the Quick Stop at West 18th and Chestnut streets on Tuesday night, marking the second time in less than three years that violence has broken out at the convenience store.

The shooting was reported at 7:50 p.m., Erie police said. By 8 p.m., paramedics and Erie firefighters were performing CPR on the victim, a Black male, as he was wheeled out of the store on a stretcher. An ambulance drove him to the hospital.

Police cordoned off the store, at 408 W. 18th St. No other information on the shooting was immediately available, though initial reports indicated the man might have been shot in the chest.

The Quick Stop was the scene of a fatal shooting about 2½ years ago. Erie resident Kyontia L. Blanks was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for killing Frederick Perry, 40, outside the store on Oct. 21, 2020.

Blanks, 26, was convicted at trial in January and sentenced to nine to 18 years in state prison in February.

Blanks shot Perry as the victim was getting out of his car in the front of the store at 5:35 p.m. Perry was unarmed.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office argued for first-degree murder or third-degree murder. The defense argued self-defense, claiming that Blanks was scared of Perry because Perry had threatened his life twice in the weeks leading up to the shooting in a dispute over a woman.

The prosecution relied heavily on surveillance video as evidence at trial. The video, taken from a camera outside the store, showed the slaying from start to finish.
