PUNE: The city police's economic offences wing (EOW) is investigating a 61-year-old retired inspector's complaint accusing a private finance firm of cheating him of Rs 7.6 lakh by promising good returns on investment.
So far, the police have come across five to six more victims of the firm and are expecting the number of complaints to grow. A case of cheating and criminal breach of trust has been registered with the Chatushrungi police.
According to the complaint, the retired police officer, who stays in Anandnagar off Sinhagad Road, invested Rs 7.5 lakh in the firm in March 2022, but the firm failed to deliver on promised returns and closed its Baner Road office in September last year.
Assistant commissioner of police (EOW) Vijay Palsule told TOI, "Our team on Monday visited the office of the firm but it was locked."
According to the complaint, the firm's office bearers made random calls to people in Pune and urged them to invest in their schemes for high returns. "The victim and others waited for a year but the firm operator failed to give any returns or the basic investment amount," Palsule said.
