PUNE: A 26-year-old suspect arrested by the Pune police's crime branch officials in vehicle theft cases was found hanging from an iron bar in one of the enclosures of the Pune police’s central lockup facility at Vishrambaug police station, early on Wednesday morning.
The lockup is one of the bigger common facilities of the Pune police where suspects arrested by different police units are kept in custody to overcome their own space issues.
The deceased, Shivaji Garad, was found hanging by a torn blanket converted into a rope and put across an iron bar inside the enclosure, the police claimed.
There were 25 other suspects lodged in the same enclosure, with whom Garad was having conversation till around midnight. Police claimed none of these suspects have been able to tell them how the death occurred. There were no guards to keep any eye on the activities in the lockup enclosure. Only a couple of guards at the main gate take a round after every hour-and-a-half to check the enclosures.
The death occurred sometime between Tuesday midnight and early Wednesday morning.
While the police are claiming it to be a case of suicide, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had reached the lockup on Wednesday morning to investigate the custodial death.
