Jaipur: City police on Tuesday started a special drive against tipplers. ADG (Traffic) VK Singh said the crackdown would be extended across all districts in the coming months.
DCP (Traffic) Prahlad Singh Krishniya said the aim of the drive is to create awareness among people about menace of driving in the influence of liquor.
“We also wanted to make people aware of the fact that challan for drink and drive offence is now Rs 5,000. More than challans, we want people to safely reach their destinations,” Krishniya said.
Checking began from 8pm and continued till midnight. All police stations across the city also set up barricades at major intersections to check for offenders.
Armed with breathalyzers, cops stopped vehicles alongside the road to check for people driving under the influence of liquor.
Krishniya said city traffic police has been making a lot of efforts to rein in drunken driving. These measures are part of an ongoing drive to raise awareness about road safety. On Saturday, police had undertaken a similar exercise against people riding two-wheelers without helmets.
Talking to TOI, Singh said that the Rajasthan police was making efforts to make sure that number of deaths due to road accidents is declined.
