Nagpur: Finally, with the capture of two tigresses, the belated conservation translocation project of Maharashtra forest department to augment tiger numbers in Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR) will become a reality in the next 2-3 days.
The crucial project was hanging fire for over one year. MoEFCC granted permission to translocate 4-5 tigers on September 15, 2022. NTCA too gave a green signal in October, and the drive to capture tigers started in November. However, for 5-6 months, the identified animals remained elusive, forcing the forest officials to capture two other tigresses.
The rapid rescue team (RRT) from Tadoba captured two tigresses for re-release. On Tuesday (May 16) morning, a 2.5-year-old tigress (T4) was tranquillized in the Armori range in Gadchiroli. On May 14, one more tigress, grown-up cub of Hirdinala female of TATR’s Kolsa range, was also captured.
