The hungerstrike by three students of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) entered the third day on Wednesday with the administration yet to respond to their demands.
The FTII Students Association said the health of the three is “stable” and being monitored by a institute-affiliated doctor.
“There has been no communication from the administration, save an email to the student against whom ‘exclusionary’ action has been taken. In the email, the administration has asked him to provide evidence for his mental illness and his consultations with a doctor in last one year. Apart from this, they have also asked for a fitness certificate to carry on with classes,” said one of the protesting students.
About 43 students of the 2020 batch have gone on a strike and boycotted classes in support of their classmate who has been ‘removed’ from the batch, and asked to retake the semester with the next batch as a supernumerary student.
In April 2023, the students said they got to know that five students of the 2020 batch were “expelled” for various academic reasons. Following demands by the students, an emergency Academic Council meeting was held and of the five expelled, four were allowed to rejoin their classes on the condition that they will do additional remedial exercises.
One student of film direction course, however, wasn’t provided this concession.
The FTII administration said his case was different from others, as he had only 30 per cent attendance which was too low to allow him to continue with the rest of the batch.
But the protesting students have said that as a supernumerary student, he will not be allowed any practical coordinated exercises and thus will have no work to show when he finishes his studies.
