An independent journalist and an ex-Navy commander have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for alleged espionage, officials said on Wednesday.

A senior CBI official said that Vivek Raghuvanshi—a freelance defence journalist working for a US-based portal—and Ashish Pathak, a former Navy commander were arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information related to the country’s defence with foreign intelligence agencies.

He said the duo were sent to six days in CBI custody by a special court today.

Providing details, the official said that Raghuvanshi and Pathak were arrested in connection with the case which the CBI had taken over from Delhi Police Special Cell on December 9 last year on the directions of the Union Home Ministry.

The CBI had then registered a separate FIR against Raghuvanshi based on the one filed by the Deli Police who were on the journalist’s trail since September last year after they received intel that some Indian journalists were collecting information about country’s strategic defence matters and passing on the critical info to foreign intelligence agencies.

The leaked information could pose a threat to cordial relations with friendly countries, the official said.

As per the FIR registered by the Delhi Police Special Cell, an Indian journalist was illegally gathering “sensitive details” about “future procurement of armed forces which reveal the strategic preparedness of our country’s classified communications/information related to national security, and details of strategic and diplomatic talks of India with our friendly countries, which can spoil the bilateral relations of India with them.”

It claimed that Raghuvanshi allegedly procured and supplied this information to intelligence agencies of foreign countries.

On Tuesday, the CBI raided 12 locations in Delhi-NCR and Jaipur, including Raghuvanshi’s residence, in connection with the espionage case.

The probe agency then arrested the scribe and ex-Navy commander Pathak and the two accused were been booked under Section 3 (spying) of the Official Secrets Act and with Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The CBI has claimed that “sensitive documents” were recovered during the searches and have been sent for legal scrutiny.

Karnataka CM battle: DK Shivakumar turns down multiple options from Congress as stalemate continues

Published

on

Stalemate between the Congress top brass and Karnataka unit chief DK Shivakumar continues over the Chief Minister post as latter has reportedly turned down several offers made to him by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

Quoting sources, an NDTV report said that Kharge and Gandhi made two offers to DK Shivakumar in a two-hour meeting at Delhi today but the Karnataka Congress leader turned down both options.

As per the report, the Congress high command offered Shivakumar the chair of Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister—which he will not share with anyone, and six ministries of his choosing. He would also continue to head the state unit of the party.

Another offer pitched by the Congress was the idea of power sharing between Siddaramaiah—who the party seems determined to hand a second term as Chief Minister—and Shivakumar.

This would’ve meant that Siddaramaiah would head the government as Chief Minister for the first two years and then Shivakumar would ascend to the top post for the next three years.

However, the option was reportedly turned down by both leaders as both Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah want a shot at the Chief Minister’s chair first.

According to reports, Shivakumar has been adamant on becoming the next chief minister of Karnataka citing his work in rebuilding the party in the state over the last four years after the debacle of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government’s collapse which happened when a good portion of the party’s MLAs walked out.

Shivakumar is also a big name among the politically Vokkaligas while Siddaramaiah is backed by the AHINDA—a traditional Congress vote bank that consists of minorities, Other Backward Classes, and Dalits.

Earlier, another media report, quoting sources, had claimed that Siddaramaiah will be next chief minister of the state and state party chief DK Shivakumar will be his deputy.

According to an India Today report, after days of deliberating, the Congress high command has finally made up their mind and green-lighted Siddaramaiah as the next chief minister of Karnataka with DK Shivakumar likely to be given the deputy CM responsibilities.

The report, quoting Congress sources, said that Siddaramaiah will likely be sworn-in on Thursday afternoon and will take the oath alone.

A Congress legislator party meeting will also be called tomorrow at Kanteerava Stadium around 3.30 pm, the report said.

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were the main contenders for the state’s top post after the grand old party registered a thumping victory in last week’s Assembly elections by winning 135 out of the 224 seats.

Shivakumar, who along with Siddaramaiah, was the backbone of the Congress campaign that ousted the BJP from power in the recently held elections, is likely to be offered coveted portfolios along with the Deputy CM chair, the report said.

According to reports, the incident took place at a market in Patna city under the Pirbahore Police Station limits.

A video of the incident, purportedly shot by one of the assailants, has gone viral on social media platforms and shows a group of local Muslim men approaching the victim, Sagar Kumar Mishra, who is driving a motorcycle while a Muslim woman is riding pillion.

The men halt Mishra and question him why he’s roaming around with a Muslim girl despite being a Hindu.

The victim is heard telling the men that he and the woman are classmates, however, the men start assaulting Mishra and also admonish the woman for riding on a bike with a Hindu man while asking her to go home and never repeat the “mistake”.

A senior official of the Bihar Police said that they have not received any complaint from either Mishra or the girl in connection with the incident, but they have taken cognizance of the video and started and investigation into the matter.

The official said that a case has been registered in this regard and the police is using local sources as well as technological aid to identify the accused men who attacked Mishra.

Locals had claimed that the man was harassing girls at the school and was using a fake name.

Upon investigations, it was revealed that the man’s name, as per his Aadhaar card, was Arif, but he used to introduce himself as Raja.

On Tuesday, Congress scion Rahul Gandhi met party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Randeep Surjewala to deliberate upon picking the Chief Ministerial candidate for Karnataka.

Both DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah also met the party’s top leadership in New Delhi on Tuesday.

On Saturday, the Congress registered a huge victory in the Karnataka Assembly polls, wresting the power back from arch rivals BJP as it secured a simple majority with 135 seats in 224-seat Assembly.

The ruling BJP won 66 seats while former CM HD Kumaraswamy’s Janata Dal (Secular) secured 19 seats.

Siddaramaiah’s veteran guile, leadership skills and mass popularity and DK Shivakumar’s organisation abilities have been credited for the Congress’s remarkable comeback in the Karnataka polls where even the BJP’s trusted method of calling in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, failed.
