Two girls are suspected to have drowned while seven others were rescued from Pune’s Khadakwasla dam Monday morning, police said. An extensive search and rescue operation has been launched to locate the missing girls, said a fire brigade official.
The rescued girls were rushed to Khanapur Public Health Centre (PHC), officials said. Their condition is reportedly stable.
According to initial information shared by the police, the group of about nine girls arrived in Gorhe Budruk village to attend a wedding. The pandal where the ceremony was scheduled to happen is located near the dam.
The police believe the girls began to play in the dam’s water around 9 am. When some of them began to drown, local residents rushed to help and managed to rescue seven of them.
Meanwhile, the fire brigade and Pune rural police were informed about the incident. A team from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) fire brigade and officials from Haveli police station have reached the spot.
