HYDERABAD: Telangana has been put on orange and yellow alert for heat by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The districts under orange alert are largely in the northern and eastern parts of the state. Meanwhile, GHMC limits are on yellow alert for next five days.
According to officials, the prevailing heat conditions were occurring due to Cyclone Mocha, which made landfall in northeast Bay of Bengal. "Currently low level winds are blowing from northwesterly direction towards Telangana. Owing to this, dry weather is likely to occur in Telangana for the next three days. Maximum temperatures are likely to rise gradually for the next three days and in some northern districts in the state, will record approximately 42°C to 44°C," IMD said in an official statement.
Weather watchers also took to Twitter to caution people in the state and city against heatwave. "Mainly north and east Telangana will witness over 46°C heat and Hyderabad will see temperatures close to 43°C. Strong hot winds to blow across Telangana," tweeted Telangana Weatherman.
According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, Mancherial recorded 45.9°Celsius on Sunday. Four other districts- Nizamabad, Jagtial, Nalgonda and Asifabad - also saw temperatures exceed 45°C. In Hyderabad, the highest temperature, 42°C, was recorded at Khairatabad followed by 40.7°C in Patigadda.
As per IMD, Khammam and Bhadrachalam witnessed a three degree rise in maximum temperatures on Sunday, aggravating the situation. However, no heat wave has been declared yet.
