American e-commerce website Etsy quoting over Rs 1 lakh for a charpai has sparked a debate on Indian social media. Usually sold at less than 1/20the the price quoted on Etsy, the charpai, as all know, is a functional bed in most villages.

The charpai is the latest entry in this trend of reinventing desi products. A start-up from Germany rediscovered the pattal, plates made of dried leaves, and sold them calling them nature-friendly plates. The leaf plate has been around in India for far longer in different parts of the country.

The Etsy product description for the charpai is: A traditional Indian bed, hand-crafted with high-quality materials and beautiful decor.

Tweeting on the charpai sale on Etsy, a user expressed his happiness that how people of the USA are buying the charpai. Another user noted the very high price and noted that at this price, Americans can afford to make a 2-3 day trip to India.

Some have called a spade a spade and have cried hoarse on social media, others found the price worth the true value of craftsmanship.

E-commerce websites have taken the rustic mainstream, be it puja items, havan kunds or even cow dung cakes. While e-commerce sites have zeroed in on fashion, they sell quite a wide range of apparel and footwear ranging from the quotidian to the downright weird. Even torn T-shirts are doing the rounds along with pouches fashioned from garbage bags, yep.

The charpai maybe a stretch but successive governments at the Centre have promoted village and cottage industries. The reinvention of khadi as a versatile fabric to be worn either as office wear as shirts and the kurta as leisurewear has been a lifesaver for traditional handloom weavers, in the face of the cheap oceans of industrial polyester.

Regular folks don’t follow IPL matches intently in cricket venues. Instead, they go for the atmosphere to experience the untamed enthusiasm of thousands of fans supporting their chosen teams.

Many people lack the means to even purchase front-row tickets to watch their favourite cricketers closely. The majority of them wind up seated very high in the back where they can barely see anything.

Nevertheless, they have a good time the entire time and smile as they go home. But during the current IPL season, one man made the decision to combine the excitement of the cricket stadium with the chance to view the game from all the greatest vantage points. So he decided to sprawl out on the stadium seats and watch the game on his phone!

In a clip shared on Twitter, a sizable crowd can be seen cheering for their favourite IPL team. A man can be seen watching the game on his phone as the camera pans to the backseat. The clip is from the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana cricket stadium in Lucknow.

As the counting of the mega Karnataka polls began at 8 AM in the morning, just moments before it Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy put an end to the alliance talks speculation that was on rise since yesterday.

Kumaraswamy said while speaking to the reporters that he has not been contacted by any party till now and is going to wait for the final results before taking any decision.

The senior JD(S) leader added hinting at the clear majority number of the Congress in the exit polls, said there is no door for options.

Kumaraswamy termed his party to be a small party and said there is no demand for him as the exit polls have predicted JD(S) making mark in just 30-32 seats.

Tanveer Ahmed, a leader of the JD(S) claimed on Friday, that the decision for the alliance had already been taken and that both BJP and the Congress had contacted them for coalition.

JD(S) state president CM Ibrahim later in the evening yesterday dismissed all the claims made by Ahmed and said Ahmed is not the party spokesperson and not even a member of the party and that he left JD(S) a long back.

Ibrahim also said that no decision on coalition has been taken yet and they are going to wait for the results.

Both the Congress and the BJP also on Friday denied of having any talks with JD(S) and seemed quite confident of thier winning with a clear mandate.

The counting of the votes has already begun and within just several hours the final results would be out deciding the fate of the political parties especially the BJP and the Congress.

While the BJP is hoping to break the 38 year old tradition where the state has never seen a party returning back to power for a consecutive term. Congress is also looking forward for a major victory as exit polls predicted a comfortable majority for the grand old party.
