How to get the Hylian Shield in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a new direction for the series that's also full of callbacks and references to the long lineage of the series. Among various armor and weapons, including the Master Sword, one other iconic piece of equipment from Link's past makes a return, though not unless you go looking for it. The classic Hylian Shield is Link's most trusted defense and is required to complete your classic set. Here's how to get the Hylian Shield in Tears of the Kingdom.

How to get the Hylian Shield

Unlike in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Hylian Shield is no longer in the same location. Instead of being inside Hyrule Castle, it is now nearby, but still dangerous to reach.

Step 1: Travel to the northern part of Hyrule Castle Moat.

Step 2: Either sail or find a high point to drop from to land on the docks.

Step 3: Make your way inside the cave to an interior dock.

Step 4: Either fight off or avoid the dangerous enemies on your way to the highest level of the docks.

Step 5: Light the big brazier in the middle of some torches to cause a chest to appear.

Step 6: Pop it open and claim your prize!

As strong as it is, the Hylian Shield is not indestructible. If it breaks, you thankfully can repair/replace it if you've got the cash. Cecec will sell rare outfits at her shop after you've done all the sidequests there, including the Hylian Shield, but at a massive cost. She will also only sell them when yours is broken, so you can't ever stack more than one.

Part of the appeal of any open world is finding fun and unique ways to navigate it -- and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is absolutely overflowing with creative transportation methods. However, sometimes you just want to keep things simple with a tried-and-true horse. You could always find and stable any number of normal horses across Hyrule, but if you're fancying something that feels a bit more dark and creepy, you'll want to round up a skeletal horse. Here's how to find a skeletal horse in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

If you want to ride these rare mounts around Hyrule, perhaps the easiest spot to round up skeletal horses is at Sanidin Park Ruin, across the river to the west of Mount Daphnes. If you visit this location late at night, you should spot plenty of skeletal horses wandering around the ruins. You can mount them like any other horse -- just slowly walk over to their side while they're standing still and quickly tap the A button.

Meanwhile, herds of skeletal horses can also be found deep underground in the pitch-dark Depths. You'll certainly stumble upon plenty of chasms leading to the Depths during your journey through Hyrule, so getting down there shouldn't pose too much of a problem.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players are given unlimited freedom to solve puzzles in any way they want. Shrine puzzles, for instance, usually have a developer-intended solution that can be entirely bypassed with clever thinking. However, players are already drunk with power as they find inventive ways to tackle problems ... and that's bad news for Hyrule's Korok population.

As was the case in Breath of the Wild, Koroks are cute little creatures that act as a primary collectible in Tears of the Kingdom. Link must solve small puzzles out in the world to reveal them and get a Korok seed in exchange, which is then used to upgrade his gear slots. In a recurring puzzle, Link finds a Korok who wants to be reunited with a friend off in the distance -- but it can't move due to its gigantic backpack. It's up to Link to move the Korok in any way he can think of.
