Post-outbreak travel to Africa tourism is slowly returning to normal in a powerful way with the main places key like South Africa witnessing major growth in significant visitor numbers, exceeding global arrivals this year.

During COVID, African tourism was one of the most badly impacted industries, said the minister of tourism, SA, Patricia de Lille, while sharing her thoughts at the Africa Travel Indaba conference arranged in Durban, last week.

The arrivals in South Africa show the rapid growth in visitor numbers in the continent. SA last year welcomed the third maximum travelers with around 6.8 million tourists, as per GlobalData, the data analytics firm, trailing only in Morocco and Egypt.

The head of insights for South Africa Travel, Neesha Pillay, said that in 2022, they have reached 70 percent of their arrivals in 2019. It’s a huge recovery rate keeping in mind that the global revival rate was almost 63 percent.

Pillay said that this market has been doing quite good as by 2024, they hope to reach the levels of 2019. So, locally, travelers from the US are one of the fastest-growing.

When compared with 2022, the capacity of airline committed to Africa have risen by 65 percent, Pillay said, as this year, both Delta and United have added their flights to Cape Town.

For United, airfares are almost $1,300 and for Delta, airfares are $1,700, which have added 25 percent more capacity than last year, Pillay said.
