Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Monday that the concept of non-kinetic warfare has highlighted the need for advanced technology in the defence sector. He was speaking at the 12th convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) at Girinagar in Pune.
The minister said in his convocation address, “The dynamics and methods of warfare are rapidly changing the world over. In addition to the perils of traditional warfare, we are also facing some new threats. In addition to the surface and air domain, we are facing threats in cyber and space domains too. The concept of non-kinetic or contactless warfare has highlighted the need for advanced technology in the defence sector. Thus, our adversaries having advanced technologies than us, can be a cause of concern.”
As Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh is the Chancellor of the DIAT, which is an autonomous body under the Department of Defence Research and Development under the Ministry of Defence. Singh conferred degrees to the graduating students which included serving officers of the Armed forces and other key institutions.
The DIAT conducts various academic programmes such as PhD, MTech and Master of Science (by Research) and many customised short courses in defence and related technologies for officers of the Army, Navy and the Air Force, Scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other establishments of the Ministry of Defence, government agencies as well as civilian students and engineers working in industries.
Speaking about self reliance in defence sector, Singh said, “A vast country like India, can not be exclusively dependent on imports in any sector. If we only rely on imports for defence platforms and equipment, it will make us dependent on other countries in defence sector. This dependence will be detrimental to our strategic autonomy. In addition, more we import from other countries, it will have increasing adverse effects on our balance of trade.”
