Demolition waste piles up here as illegal dumping goes unchecked
The C&D waste has aggravated dust pollution in the area, residents have alleged
GURGAON: Residents of Sector 22B alleged that dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste rampant on vacant plots. They claimed MCG has taken no steps to stop it. Due to multiple construction activities in and around the sector, locals pointed out, C&D waste ends up on the vacant plots increasing the dust pollution in the vicinity.
The residents alleged that the sector has open access with no boundary walls and people from nearby villages often dump the waste at the market area and adjoining the community centres. Meena Gupta, who has been living here since 2004 said that earlier it used to be occasional dumping but off late, it has become a nuisance with rounds of tractors disposing the waste.
“Since our sector has open access, people coming from nearby villages simply dump their C&D waste at market areas, which have most of the land unused and vacant, turning it into a dump site. We cannot open our windows as layers of dust from the site opposite to our house accumulate on the furniture. This has also aggravated the dust pollution causing respiratory problems,” she said. Several complaints have been made to MCG to clear the vacant plots. “Heaps of C&D waste can be seen at various places in the sector.
Moreover, household waste is also being dumped, emanating foul smell and becoming a haven for snakes and rodents. Apart from destroying the aesthetics of the sector, this is also posing a serious health hazard. Due to lack of action by the MCG, people blatantly flout rules despite this being a punishable offense,” Bhim Singh Yadav, RWA president, said. Meanwhile, an MCG official said that it is the property owner’s responsibility to prevent any dumping on their site and fence the plot. “If the plots are unused for long, then HSVP should issue notices to allottees,” the MCG official said, adding that he will get it checked and the needful will be done to resolve the problem.
