Bhubaneswar: If you want to try out a variety of authentic street food at a reasonable price, the food lane (Khao Gali) near Infocity is the place to be.
Khao Gali is one of the busiest lanes offering a plethora of items. From momos, Chinese, chats, soft drinks, biriyani, kebabs to pizza and fruit salad, city’s food lovers can enjoy a variety of dishes which will not pinch the pockets hard.
No surprise then that it’s one of the busiest hangout zones in the city every evening. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recognized these street vendors in terms of hygiene and quality of food. It also ensures that there is no littering around and each vendor mandatorily keeps a dustbin near to their shop. To open a shop, one needs to get certified from the BMC.
In the street one can find vans offering a variety of food items. Students, office workers and families come to to try out different types of delicacies.
“There are 20 varieties of kebabs in our shop out of which garlic kebab and normal tikka kebab are sold the most,” said Manas Ranjan Barik, who works in a kebab stall.
“On Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and festivals, we get maximum crowd. Our sale goes up to around 12kg of chicken shawarma. On normal days, the average sale is 10kg,” said Allahudin Mohammad, owner of a shawarma shop.
Mohammad Navi, a shawarma seller, said sometimes they get so many customers that they run out of stock. “Mostly students from nearby educational institutions visit us. Our garlic shawarma is the most famous,” he added.
Apart from fastfood, the place also offers a variety of tea. The food lane also serves shakes and soft drinks. There are also shops which offer fresh fruit salad and juice for fitness freaks.
“Here the food is good and hygienic. The food items are reasonable and pocket-friendly. This place makes everyone come here to discover new food items and have a good time,” said Kapil Sharma, a customer.
Such food streets are spread across the capital city which makes it feasible for people to come out and spend some quality time.
