Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, gender and sexual orientation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in India and polygamy will come to an end. The statement came while addressing the “Hindu Ekta Yatra" organized by Telangana BJP president and Lok Sabha MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar at Karimnagar.

“There are some people in India who thought they can marry four women. That was their thinking. But, I say you will not be able to do four marriages. Those days are going to come to an end. That day is not far. Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is going to come in India," the chief minister said.

Recently, Sarma said the state government has constituted a four-member expert committee to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy, according to a report published by PTI.

Without naming Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Assam CM, who is a senior BJP leader said in Telangana "Ram Rajya" is coming in place of "Raja's rule".

"Raja has just five months left. We need 'Ram Rajya' in Telangana and that is our goal. Based on Hindu civilization we have to make 'Ram Rajya' in Telangana," he said. Telangana Assembly elections are scheduled to be held later this year.

He said the Telangana government, again and again, arrests Bandi Sanjay Kumar but he comes out and the government will not succeed in keeping him in jail.

"Like Hanuman ji established 'Ram Rajya', we are confident that Bandi Sanjay will establish 'Ram Rajya' in Telangana," he said.

What is Uniform Civil Code?

Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, gender and sexual orientation.

Notably, in Bharatiya Janata Party's 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto, BJP promised the implementation of UCC if it comes to power.

Many political leaders have backed the UCC saying that it will bring equality to the country, while some parties, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and All India United Democratic Front, have termed it "an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move".
