GURGAON: Diagnosed with a rare tumour in her uterus, a 48-year-old woman underwent a successful surgery at a city hospital to remove it.
The woman, a homemaker, had approached doctors at Manipal Hospital late last month with complaints of persistent abdominal pain and erratic menstrual cycles since the past two months.
An MRI scan found a large tumour – 6cm in diameter, and benign (non-cancerous) – along both sides of her uterine wall (called angiolipoleiomyoma).
It had also spread to the fallopian tubes and ovaries.
Dr Sharmila Salonki, the consultant gynecologist who operated on the woman, said on Monday that this tumour is found in the uterus in 0.06% of all diagnosed cases. It is mostly seen in the kidneys. A tumour larger than 4cm in diameter can be life threatening if it bursts, causing hemorrhage, doctors said.
Dr Salonki said that a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and bilateral salpingectomy procedure (removal of fallopian tubes and ovaries) was chosen after gauging the threat.
The surgery was carried out last week.
