GUWAHATI/IMPHAL: Unidentified men fired at area domination parties of the Army and Assam Rifles in Manipur’s Senapati and Churachandpur districts on Saturday, injuring two AR personnel. This is the second such attack since Thursday, when one Assam Rifles jawan was wounded in Imphal East district.
Army’s Dimapur-based 3rd Corps said the patrol parties returned the fire when attacked in the forest areas of Lailampat village and Vill Sipijang. The attackers at Vill Sipijang fled upon being retaliated, leaving two rifles and ammunition on the spot.
The Army said sustained domination of sensitive farflung areas was being undertaken to reassure local population of safety and security.
Meanwhile, three persons allegedly kidnapped by suspected Kuki militants near the border of riot-hit Churachandpur district are yet to be freed, while the whereabouts of two others, who went missing near a Kuki camp in Imphal West district, still remain unknown. Irate locals have stepped up pressure on the government, demanding their safe release.
N Prakash (33), Th Shyam (34) and L Suresh (23), all residents of Bishnupur district, were allegedly abducted from Torbung Bangla on Thursday. Atom Samarendra (47) and Yumkhaibam Kirankumar (47), both residents of Khumbong Bazaar, went missing while travelling in a car on May 6.
