NEET UG 2023: Female candidates’ bra straps checked; some asked to change clothes in open

Candidates alleged that they were asked to remove their clothing and were either made to wear them inside out or swap with their parents.

NEET UG 2023

Once again, the frisking policies of the National Testing Agency (NTA) have come under fire during the NEET UG exam. At least two incidents have been reported from Maharashtra and West Bengal respectively where some aspirants were asked to change their attire, had their innerwear examined, or were asked to wear them inside out.

Over 2 million candidates appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2023 which was held on Sunday at 4,000 odd centers. Some of the candidates shared their experiences on social media about their frisking policies.

Candidates alleged that they were asked to remove their clothing and were either made to wear them inside out or swap with their parents.

A controversial incident raised the eyebrows of many after candidates on social media reported about the manner in which authorities were checking the bra straps of female aspirants and also asked them to open their innerwear for frisking.

A doctor couple complained to TOI that girl students in a center in Sangli (Kasturba Walchand College) students were made to remove their kurtas and wear them inside out. They said this is absolutely unacceptable and no way to treat students who appear for such an important exam. This action itself mentally disturbs a student before a critical exam.

A candidate from HMC Education Centre, West Bengal, reported that several candidates were asked to change their pants or open their innerwear. Several girl students had interchanged their jeans with their mother’s leggings.

He further said the girls had to change their dresses in an open playground along with boys, with their parents surrounding their children to protect them as there were no enclosures or shops around the center.

Taking cognizance of the same, NTA said it will issue, comprehensive instructions to the staff at exam centers to be mindful of sensitivities involved in frisking female candidates.
