'Mothers' Rebellion' seeks climate justice and clean air for children
Mothers demonstrate near the Bhalswa landfill on Saturday
NEW DELHI: On the eve of Mother's Day, women, under the banner of Mothers' Rebellion for Climate Justice, demonstrated at Sarita Vihar and the Bhalswa landfill on Saturday to fight for clean air for the children all over the world.
The event was held in many countries to demand a sustainable world for future generations.
Holding placards, mothers sat in circles and raised slogans, "mothers unite for the planet", "doing it for kids" and "our blue sky is not your dumpyard". Mothers' Rebellion, they said, is taking action now to draw attention to the climate crisis and the air pollution that kill over seven million people each year across the world.
Bhavreen Kandhari, founder of Warrior Moms - a nationwide network demanding clean air, said, "Mothers are an undeniable force. There is a lot of strength in the community of mothers and caregivers that can bring us on the right path of sustainability and a safe future. That is why we have joined hands to support each other and take along our politicians towards a healthy climate, air and a liveable planet for the sake of all our children."
Anaari, who lives near the landfill, said, "I am a mother and I have seen my children grow up in this landfill, surrounded by filth and pollution. I joined the demonstration because I want to fight for a better future for my children and all the children who call this place home."
Aparna Rajagopal, a mother who runs an organic farm, said, "The recent heavy rainfall in Delhi and its devastating impact on crops and farmers is yet another reminder of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that are linked to climate change. Climate scientists have long warned that global warming will lead to more erratic rainfall patterns, causing droughts in some areas and floods in others."
A similar demonstration was held in 11 other cities in India and in several countries such as Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Finland, Germany, Britain, Indonesia, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the US, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
