Karnataka assembly elections 2023 results: Amid twists & turns, families taste victory
Congress’ Priyakrishna and his father M Krishnappa went through tense moments before their opponents conceded defeat.
Family politics got another seal of approval in Friday’s poll outcome with both candidates from same families fielded by Congress and BJP in Bengaluru and its neighbouring districts getting elected.
While it was smooth sailing for some family candidates, their kin had to struggle to get ahead of their rivals. However, at the end of the final counting, the results were delivered on calculated lines.
The first family to heave a sigh of relief was that of former Union minister and seven-time parliamentarian from Congress KH Muniyappa and his daughter Roopakala Shashidhar. While Muniyappa won in Devanahalli, Roopakala contested from KGF. Both the father and daughter managed to pull off comfortable victories, maintaining an impressive margin from the beginning itself.
However, the father-son duo of M Krishnappa and Priyakrishna went through some tense moments. Krishnappa trailed in Vijayanagar by a few thousand votes initially and so was the case with Priyakrishna in Govindarajanagar. BJP candidates in both constituencies gave the father and son a tough fight before conceding defeat. The duo had also been elected in 2013 and is set to enter the assembly together for the second time. Priyakrishna had lost in 2018, when his father coasted to victory.
Choosing to field a fresh face in the tech corridor of Mahadevapura, BJP leaders picked Manjula Limbavali, wife of incumbent MLA Aravind Limbavali. Manjula is the sister of BJP MLA Raghu from neighbouring CV Raman Nagar. Facing stiff opposition from Congress and AAP candidates, both Manjula and Raghu were initially found to be trailing by a few thousand votes. Though Raghu managed to gain a considerable lead in the subsequent rounds, victory for Manjula remained elusive until the last few rounds when she gained enough lead to win.
Elsewhere, JD(S) Arkalgud MLA A Manju and his son Mantar Gowda (Congress) won from Madikeri, while G T Deve Gowda from Chamundeshwari and his son GD Harish Gowda from Hunsur won on JD(S) tickets. Apart from this, 50 dynasts tasted victory across the state.
