NOIDA: BJP's Geeta Sharma defeated her nearest rival from the Samajwadi Party by a 5,758 vote margin to win the Dadri nagar palika chairperson seat a third time in a row.
There were 12 candidates in the fray for the seat. Sharma got 22,243 votes against SP candidate Ayub Malik's 16,485 votes. BSP's Ravinder Singh got 3,953 votes and came third. Congress's Ashok Kumar Sharma got 1,147 votes, and Reeta of Aam Aadmi Party got 293. Also, 132 people voted NOTA in this election.
Sharma is the wife of BJP leader Vijay Pandit, who a group of assailants gunned down in Dadri in 2014.
Sharma credited her win to the party leadership and locals. "I got votes from all sections, including Muslims. I have done much work in Dadri, so people voted for me a third time. I got the footpaths interlocked, developed parks in different areas, made public toilets and rain baseras, redeveloped ponds, etc. This is a triple-engine government, the BJP in the Centre, state and municipality, which means developments," she told TOI.
About areas requiring her attention, Sharma said sanitation is a problem in Dadri. "We will develop a dumping ground to dispose of municipal waste. We will also set up a sewage system in the area. Parking is also an important issue. We have decided to shift the old bus stand to some other place and use the vacated space for a multi-level parking facility to unclog the area," she said.
In the 2017 elections, Sharma defeated Malik, then a BSP candidate, by a margin of 2,181 votes. She got 18,818 votes against Malik's 16,337. In 2012 too, Malik faced defeat as Sharma got 8,817 votes in the municipal elections against his 7,755.
