NCP MP Supriya Sule has demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) name the under-construction multi-level flyover in Chandni Chowk after freedom fighter Senapati Bapat.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, in a communication to the PMC and NHAI, said the multi-level flyover is nearing completion. “It is the entry point to Mulshi tehsil. Thus, the name of Senapati Bapat should be given to the flyover as a tribute to the leader who contributed in a big way to the residents of Mulshi,” she said.

Mulshi has a historical background as Senapati Bapat, a revolutionary freedom fighter, had in 1921 launched a movement for farmers and sons of the soil, Sule said. “The 100th anniversary of the movement was held recently. His contribution to Mulshi is huge. Naming the flyover after Senapati Bapat will be a (mark of) respect to him and his fight will be remembered by all,” the NCP MP said.

The flyover is Mulshi’s main connecting point with the city and the junction holds significance as it is on the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass. Sule said the area has been witnessing heavy traffic congestion as well as road accidents over the last few years. She has been following up on the issue with the Union government to resolve it at the earliest.

The multi-level flyover, being constructed by the NHAI, has missed many deadlines. It was meant to be fully opened on May 1 but since the work is yet to be completed, only partial opening has been possible.
