CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: The CID has arrested two police inspectors on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy in connection with a nine-year-old illegal detention and death in custody case.
Inspector Umashankar Kasture (53) and assistant inspector Balwant Jamadar (57) were accused of illegally detaining a suspected bike thief. Kasture is heading the Parli police station in Beed, while Jamadar is posted at Kotwali police station in Parbhani.
Tukaram Jogadand, along with a bike he had allegedly stolen, was picked up by three Parli constables on August 15, 2014. He was produced before the assistant inspector. CID deputy SP Subhash Dudhal told TOI, "After taking Jogadand into illegal detention, the policemen allegedly assaulted him to get a confession. He fell unconscious. The policemen said he committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope."
He said, "A charge sheet indicting six policemen under various sections of IPC was filed on January 5, 2021. The deceased's mother, Laxmibai, moved the HC with a plea to add murder charges and sought reinvestigation. The HC granted her plea on March 10, 2023."
The officer said GMCH (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) forensic medicine and toxicology experts' opinion concluded that Jogdand was unconscious when hanged.
