ISTANBUL—Turkish voters go to the polls on Sunday in one of the most crucial elections in the country’s history—a vote that could bring to an end the long rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and have far-reaching geopolitical consequences for the Middle East, Ukraine and NATO.

Mr. Erdogan has towered over Turkish politics for two decades, tightening his grip over the country and eroding democratic institutions at home, while also raising the country’s profile on the international stage.
