SURAT: A bag containing circuit boards and clocks left behind by a customer triggered panic in a jewellery shop on Friday. However, it turned out to be a hoax as there was no explosive substance found in the bag.
Based on the complaint filed by the owner of New Nakrani Jewellers, Mahesh Nakrani, police registered a non-cognizable offence at Kapodra police station.
According to police, a person who introduced himself as Hardik had come to New Nakrani Jewellers in Kapodra on Wednesday. He inquired about making charges saying that he had some old gold that he wanted to be made into jewellery. The man showed a bag claiming he had 500 gram of gold in it.
The man left the bag in the shop saying he will return with more gold. When the man did not return till Friday, Mahesh Nakrani tried to contact him over phone. But the calls went unanswered.
So, Nakrani opened the bag and found circuit boards and clocks inside it. Suspecting it to be explosive, Nakrani called the police. However, the bomb squad after inspection concluded that there was no explosive in the bag. "The bag contained a circuit board with wires and a digital clock, but no explosives. We are scanning the CCTV footage to identify the person who came with the bag," said a police officer.
During questioning, Nakrani told police that he and his employee had got three parcels from an online shopping website at their homes. As they had not ordered anything, they did not open the boxes. The parcels also contained digital clocks in wooden boxes.
Meanwhile, another jewellery shop with a similar name Nakrani Jewellers in Utran police station area got a call from a person asking for gold.
Police are investigating if the owners of both the jewellery stores were linked.
