BJP ally Apna Dal (S) has won probably last Samajwadi Party bastion in UP by defeating Anuradha Chauhan with a margin of 8,724 votes.
BJP ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) has won the Suar assembly seat by a margin of 8,724 votes. Suar assembly seat was considered one of the last bastions of the Samajwadi Party. It had fell vacant after the disqualification of Azam Khan's son Abdullah Azam Khan in a 15-year-old case.
Apna Dal (Sonelal) had fielded Shafeek Ahmed Ansari, while the Samajwadi Party had selected Anuradha Chauhan for the elections.
Samajwadi Party candidate Kirti Kol from Channbey is also trailing by a margin of 9,381 to Apna Dal (Sonelal) candidate Rinki Kol. After thirty rounds of counting, Kirti Kol has garnered 72,480 votes, SP's Kirti Kol is lagging behind with 63,099 votes.
Samajwadi Party Stalwart Azam Khan's son Abdullah Azam Khan won the Suar assembly constituency in 2022, defeating Apan Dal (Sonelal) candidate Haidar Ali Khan by a margin of over 61,000 votes. However, in Abdullah Azam Khan was sentenced to two years in jail by a Moradabad-based court.
Azam Khan and his son were found guilty under section 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) along with other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case was involving a dharna that father-son duo had done in 2008.
While the BJP did not field a candidate from the Suar constituency, the saffron party was particularly active in the campaign. The victory in the UP by-elections and municipal elections come as a relief to the party, which is reeling after losing the assembly elections in Karnataka, the only southern state it ruled.
