In postal ballot counting for the post of Mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Prayagraj, BJP candidate Ganesh Kesarwani is leading. He is leading by 26 votes. SP candidate Ajay Srivastava is trailing in the second place.
On the Mubarakpur seat of Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party candidate is leading for the post of chairman.
Independent candidate Moazzam Khan is ahead in the counting of postal ballots for the post of Bijnor Najibabad Municipality President. So far in the municipality, BJP is leading on 4 seats, SP on 4 seats, and BSP on 2 seats, according to a report by ABP News.
As the counting for Nagar Nikay Chunav in UP, the Samajwadi party has made an edge over BJP in the trends. BJP leading in 2 seats, while SP is ahead in 4, BSP in 2, INC in 1, others in 1 seat.
As counting began for the UP Nagar Nikay Chunav, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav asked the state Election Commission to release figures after each round of counting.
“It is hoped that the Election Commission will keep telling the figures after each round so that public confidence remains,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.
The Bharatiya Janta party is showing an early lead as the counting of votes for Uttar Pradesh Municipal Elections 2023 started at counting centres across the state.
In stark contrast to the Karnataka election results on Saturday, the Urban Local Body elections in Uttar Pradesh aren’t likely to offer any thrills, with the BJP heavily tipped to sail through as it has done in elections past in the state.
The BJP hasn’t faced any electoral challenges in Uttar Pradesh since the Modi juggernaut swept through the country in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections as well as the 2019 Lok Sabha elections further cemented the saffron hold on the state.
With strong organisation, the party has also dominated local body polls, including Panchayat elections.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the Lucknow Police at all the counting centres. Phone or any type of weapon is not allowed to be taken to the counting centre by the counting agent and the candidate, said Martand P Singh, SP City, Mathura
Security arrangements tightened in Moradabad ahead of Uttar Pradesh civic election counting.
“We will have counting of votes at 4 centres here. 1,249 constables, 200 sub-inspectors, 32 inspectors and 2 teams of PAC have been deployed. Only those with valid passes will be allowed near the counting centre,” says SSP Hemraj Meena
Out of 17 municipal corporations, Lucknow, Kanpur and Ghaziabad have been reserved for general category women. In Shahjahanpur and Firozabad, seats have been reserved for OBC women while Adara was reserved for SC women.
The counting of votes for candidates from 10 civic bodies in the Sonbhadra district will start at 8 am. Separate tables have been set up at the counting centre for the counting of votes to be held at the tehsil level. Votes of Anpara Nagar Panchayat will be counted on a maximum of 18 tables. While Ghoraval and Churk will be counted on two tables each. A total of 51.38 per cent of votes have been cast this time in the civic elections.
In Saharanpur, BSP seems to have a lead in a tough contest. BSP has fielded Imran Masood’s sister-in-law Khadija for a mayoral post. Masood has a very good political hold here. Also, considering the polarization of Muslim votes, it is believed that this time the BSP is getting an edge on the Saharanpur seat.
Vehicular traffic will remain diverted during the counting of municipal corporation votes in Ghaziabad. This diversion will be in force from 5 am till the completion of the counting process.
As per ADCP Traffic, Ramanand Kushwaha, the traffic will be diverted on Hapur Road for Govindpuram Anaj Mandi and the road around it as the counting is to be held at Loni Inter College.
Among political parties, the ruling BJP has fielded the highest number of candidates, followed by the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The voting for the first phase of UP Municipal Elections 2023 took place on May 4 in 37 districts for 388 municipal corporations and their 7204 wards, while the second phase of voting was concluded on May 11 for posts across 760 local bodies.
Today’s results will decide the fates of 83,000 candidates, contesting for 14,684 posts of mayors, corporators, nagar palika chairpersons, members and nagar panchayat chairpersons and members across 760 local urban bodies, including 17 nagar nigams, 199 nagar palika parishads and 544 nagar panchayats (semi-urban local urban bodies).
As many as 85 candidates in the first phase and 77 candidates in the second phase have already been declared elected unopposed. In both phases, over 55,600 of the total contestants in the fray are independents, who account for close to 67 per cent of the total strength of candidates.
Apart from that, the state election commission’s (SEC) data shows that 35,102 women contested the polls for different posts and their share in the total number of candidates comes above 42 per cent, which is far more than the minimum 33 per cent reservation provided to women under the Constitution.
The BJP has fielded 10,758 candidates (including 4,248 women), the highest among all parties. The Samajwadi Party has fielded the second-highest number of candidates – 5,231 (2,223 women), followed by the BSP’s 3,787 (1,611 women). The Congress and AAP have fielded 2,994 (1,395 women) and 2,447 (1,031 women) candidates, respectively.
More than 46 percent of the candidates fielded by the Congress are women and this appears to be higher than that of all other main political players. Among BJP candidates, 39.48 per cent are women, which is lower than that of the BSP (42.54%), the SP (42.49%) and AAP (42%).
