With the Selaulim pipeline rupturing at Consua in Cansaulim, the residents of Mormugao and Salcete talukas are facing water scarcity.
Supply of water to the affected areas is expected to be restored by Sunday noon.
According to an official in the public works department (PWD), there is a leakage in the 1200 mm diameter MS Selaulim pipeline at Consua, Cansaulim.
“The repair work is in progress. Water supply to Salcete and Mormugao talukas will be partially affected. The repair work is expected to be completed by early morning on Sunday. Water supply will be restored by noon,” he said.
On Saturday afternoon, the pumping station at Cansaulim was informed about the water leakage.
“There are two main Selaulim pipelines, an old one and a new pipeline. The new pipeline has the leakage. Presently dewatering is going on with the help of an excavator. Once the water is drained, the exact point of leakage will be known following which repair work will be undertaken,” the official said.
Due to the ongoing work, the Salcete and Mormugao talukas will receive 60% less water, the PWD official said and added that Mormugao is likely to suffer more, as it is located at the tail end of the pipeline.
The PWD official said no foul play has been suspected.
