Hyundai Motor India, the South Korean automotive giant’s Indian subsidiary, launched the all-new 2023 Verna in March of this year. Despite polarizing opinions from buyers, it has managed to beat all other mid-size sedans in the segment, including the previous segment champion, the Honda City. In addition to the Honda City, the new Verna has also managed to dwarf the sales of the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

For the month of April 2023, the Hyundai Verna posted a sales figure of 4,001 units in total, significantly higher than its sales tally for the same month last year. In April 2022, the Hyundai Verna posted a mere 781 units in sales. The year-on-year growth percentage of Hyundai Verna sales is a staggering 412 percent increase. Furthermore, with this gargantuan sales figure in April of this year, Verna managed to capture a market share of around 39.99 percent. Additionally, Verna also performed well on a month-on-month basis, with its sales tally at 3,755 units last month, giving it an MoM growth of 6.55 percent.

The second-highest selling car on the list is Honda’s current flagship sedan in the country, the City. The City, which used to be the segment champion before the entry of the new Verna, managed to post a respectable sales figure of 1,920 units in the month of April 2023. Compared to April of last year, City sales were down by around 320 units. In April 2023, Honda managed to dispatch a total of 2,300 units of the City sedan. The overall year-on-year was down by 16.5 percent as well. Currently, the City holds 19.19 percent of the market share. Furthermore, on a month-on-month basis, City sales were down by 773 units as it managed to sell 2,693 units last month in March.

Third on the list was Czech carmaker Skoda’s newest sedan, the Slavia. The Skoda Slavia sedan managed to find 1,586 new homes in the month of April 2023, but this figure was significantly lower than the one it posted last year in the same month. Last year in April, it managed to dispatch around 2,431 units, and the year-on-year decrease is around 34.76 percent. This month’s market share is around 15.85 percent. On a MoM basis, the sales were up by a fractional 0.76 percent as the sales figure last month was around 1,574 units.

Moving on to the fourth mid-size sedan on the list, the Volkswagen Virtus, the cousin of the previously mentioned Skoda Slavia, managed to post a total sales tally of 1,481 units in the month of April 2023. The year-on-year percentage of the Volkswagen Virtus is nil because the car was launched in June of last year. The market share of the VW sedan this month is around 14.80 percent. On a MoM basis, the Virtus also suffered a decrement of around 17.35 percent as VW managed to dispatch a total of 1,792 units last year.

The last spot on the list has been reserved for the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Surprisingly, the Ciaz has managed to post a decent year-on-year growth rate and an extraordinary month-on-month growth rate. This month, Maruti Suzuki managed to dispatch around 1,017 units of this sedan, up by 64.26 percent compared to the 597 units of last year. Currently, the Ciaz has a market share of around 10.16 percent. On a MoM basis the car managed to post a massive 239 percent growth as the sales figure last month was just 300 units.
